Berkey Water Filtration Systems: Top Notch Health & Survival Tool

We purchased our Crown Berkey a few years ago, and it’s such a wonderful product that is an essential health tool for everyone that relies on municipal water districts. As a Coast Guard family, we’re constantly moving from one coastal community to another and we have yet to live anywhere in the United States (certainly not abroad!) that has great tasting, pure water that one doesn’t need to worry about immersing ourselves in (both inside and out). Even in beautiful, rural Oregon, there are water issues. Municipalities dose the water with fluoride, chlorine, and other chemicals to bring the water within legal limits. Poisons such as arsenic are tolerated within certain parts per million, and as a former auditor I find it suspect that every water report I’ve ever read from every place we’ve lived happens to have a published arsenic level “just” under the legal limit. You can do your own research on the possible dangers of fluoride, man-created and naturally occurring unwanted elements in the public water supply, but wherever your concern lies the Berkey is an awesome solution.

Berkey created a water filtration system that is based upon the premise that you can take water from any source, even scummy pond water (although they recommend you at least filter it through a t-shirt first to remove the worst of the particles), run it through the Berkey’s gravity-fed charcoal and arsenic add-on filters, and get perfectly clean, delicious water to drink and cook with. My only real complaint after having owned one for almost 2 years is that it doesn’t connect to my shower, bath and sink faucets, and it’s a little tricky to move (and we move a lot…just some specific guidelines to follow to keep the filters wet). It’s awesome, and while others in the communities we live in drink bad-tasting water, or buy bottled water at a higher long-term expense and inconvenience, we’ve got safe, delicious water everywhere we go. Here’s more from the Berkey site if you want to dive into this topic. I will also mention that the Berkey itself is a beautiful stainless steel product, that is nice to look at, classy, and of high quality.

We own the Crown Berkey, the biggest one, mainly because it holds 6 gallons of water at a time…and I cook constantly. I’m always needing gallons of water for stock, soups, boil (non-wheat!) pasta, make coffee and tea, or even oatmeal and in cooking. When it comes to health, it’s hard to find anything better for yourself than ensuring you’re putting clean water into your body.

Here’s the Crown Berkey model we love. Note that this 6 gallon version comes with all 8 charcoal filters the model can hold (maximum capacity) and is warrantied for a full 10 years of continuous use with no filter changes! It can filter up to 26 gallons per hour with all 8 filters installed, so if I’m waiting for clean water, I’m never waiting long:

Here are the add-on filters that remove arsenic and fluoride from the water. The Crown Berkey can take up to four of these add-on filters, and we use four in our own. It’s really wonderful knowing that these potential carcinogens are no longer in our water:

I also highly recommend the glass spigot that can be added onto the Berkey’s spigot. This is really an essential upgrade, because it allows you to constantly be able to see what the water level is in the Berkey (of filtered water) so you can remember to refill it as it gets low. Without it, you’d be flying blind so it’s absolutely worth the small additional cost:

There is also a smaller version, the Royal Berkey that holds 3 gallons:
This model comes with either 2 filters (and you can add 2 more later):

Or all four filters installed:

You can also get this same Royal Berkey with all four charcoal filters AND two of the four arsenic/flouride filters installed (again, two more arsenic/flouride filters can be installed later):

Here are the additional Charcoal filters that can be added onto the Berkeys:

One thing that really makes Berkeys stand out is how portable they are: they even have travel models and personal water bottle versions that you can take the outback, the bush, to Timbuktu and have the ability to always have safe water to drink. Here are some of those products available from Berkey:

This is the small “Travel Berkey” that looks identical to our big Crown Berkey, but is a miniature version that holds 1.5 gallons of water (i.e. 1/4 of the size):

And here is their great individual “Go Kit” with a small personal water bottle and the small Berkey filter that can filter up to 1 gallon per hour, but is quite small and easily packed. I believe if I’d have had one of these years ago when I travelled throughout the developing world, I probably never would have gotten sick!:
